The number
of women who seek breast implants each year continues to climb, making up for
the largest portion of all cosmetic that are performed each year in the United States.
As plastic surgery procedures continue to become more widely available and more
socially acceptable, the number of board certified and reputable doctors who
specialize in plastic surgery has seen an equal surge in growth. This overall
growth in the plastic surgery industry has allowed for innovations in
technology and procedures, which have lead to slow but steady decline in
prices. It has also lead to further exposure and attention, which only serves
to make the potential of procedures that much more feasible for more patients.
Last year
more than a third of all of the cosmetic surgical procedures performed in the United States took place in the Western United States. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons put out date showing that among
all plastic surgeries performed in 2011, breast augmentation was the most
commonly administered from of plastic surgery. Large cities like Los Angeles and Long
Beach have held witness to the boundless expansion of
surgical providers throughout the last decade and the nineties. Statistics say
that more than 5% of women in the US with choose implants in their
lifetime, which comes to more than 300,000 women each year. That means that
more than 1 out of every 5 plastic surgery procedures in the US involves
breast implants.
With the
overnight popularity breast augmentation and implants
met through the eighties and nineties there came a number of concerns that
perhaps silicone breast implants could be linked to various health conditions
or immunological disorders. Silicone implants were actually banned by the FDA
during a period between 1992 and 2006, during which ample studies were carried
out to determine possible health risks of silicone implants. During these
fourteen years silicone implants were available only to patients with breast
cancer who sought reconstructive surgery due to mastectomy procedures. The FDA
could find no significant correlation between silicone breast implants and
increased illness and thus approved silicone implants to be put back on the
market.
Although no
significant links were drawn between silicone implants and health problems, the
FDA recommends MRI screenings at regular intervals in order to remain cautious;
once three years after the initial implant surgery, and once again every two
years afterwards. While a rupture in a saline implant is noticeable almost
immediately as the saline solution leaks out and is absorbed by the body it is
no need for concern. Patients with silicone implants, however, often do not
notice ruptures for a long time after they have occurred although there are
often no noticeable side effects.
Large
cities like Long Beach and even smaller cities
like Redondo Beach and Torrance continue to welcome new plastic
surgery providers each year as they maintain a steady flow of patients and new
inquiries to breast implants and breast augmentation.
All surgeries are serious choices and should be thoroughly and thoughtfully
considered prior to making a decision. Contact
a board certified plastic surgeon in your area for a consultation if you are
considering breast augmentation, breast implants or any other form of cosmetic
breast surgery.
